Sub Sandwiches on Homemade Bread

We recently went to one of our favorite sub shops and we were disappointed with the lack of care in putting together our sandwiches. Also, one of the important ingredients in the taste of the sandwich was guacamole and we could hardly find any.  We absolutely love their bread but felt like the money we paid was not worth what we got.  So, we decided we could probably do better at home. We were very happy with our homemade sandwiches, excellent fresh bread, good quality meat and cheese and plenty of fresh guacamole.

1 cup warm milk (100°-110°)
1 cup warm water (100°-110°)
1 pkt (2¼ tsp) yeast
2 Tbl sugar
6 cups flour
1 Tbl salt
2 Tbl shortening, melted

Favorite Sandwich Toppings:
Turkey
Havarti cheese
fresh guacamole
tomato slices
shredded lettuce
mustard
pickles

In mixer bowl, stir together warm milk, warm water, sugar and yeast.  When yeast is activated, stir in 2 cups flour, salt, and shortening.  Mix in remaining flour, knead.  Turn into greased bowl and let rise until double.  Form into 6 12-inch long thin rolls.  Let rise about 30 minutes.  Bake in 375° oven about 15-18 minutes or until golden brown.  Cool on wire rack.  Slice in half or have a whole footlong!

  1. The subway shop we went to was not Subway nor Quiznos. They’re good but nothing beats homemade!

    1. I use enriched white flour, nothing special. Thank you for visiting my site! Happy baking Tara!

      1. I looked it up and yes you can use instant yeast. Multiply the amount of active dry yeast the recipe calls for by 0.75 to find out how much instant yeast you need. I think I would use about 1 3/4 tsp instant yeast. Hope this helps. Thanks for visiting my site. Happy Baking!

    1. I would imagine they would freeze like any bread, as long as they are in an airtight freezer bag. Thanks for visiting my site!

  2. Absolutely the best sub rolls ever. I used them to make homemade French dip sandwiches. The BEST I’ve ever had!! Thank you.
